Offerton 18/04/2006 - Joe Shimmin

The fossil cutting next to the stream at Offerton took me ages to find. When I did find it the shale was extremely crumbly. There were plenty of plant fossils, but none that lasted the trip home - even though I did wrap them up well. I suspect I may have been looking in the wrong part of the stream bank, but as there were fossils there and I'd spent so long looking for the right place, I took it that I was in the correct location. A very peaceful site though - in contrast to the fact that it is pretty near to an urban area.
I'd like to go back again to see if I can find some longer-lasting fossils, as can be seen in the "Fossil Photos" section. If you're visiting this site, take an A-Z, be prepared to ask locals where you're going and check out as many parts of the river bank as possible to see if you can find the right bit.
