Offerton Trip, 4th May 2009, by Alexandra Malone |
this was my second trip to offerton and much more productive than the last time as i had a wander to make sure i was in the right place then returned to the bank.
i found alot of fossil fern fragments and tree roots/branches.
but it was hard to find any decent size fossils that didnt just crumble away in my hands. not one for people who might be freaked out by bugs and larve that live in leaf litter!

Offerton 18/04/2006 - Joe Shimmin |
The fossil cutting next to the stream at Offerton took me ages to find. When I did find it the shale was extremely crumbly. There were plenty of plant fossils, but none that lasted the trip home - even though I did wrap them up well. I suspect I may have been looking in the wrong part of the stream bank, but as there were fossils there and I'd spent so long looking for the right place, I took it that I was in the correct location. A very peaceful site though - in contrast to the fact that it is pretty near to an urban area.
I'd like to go back again to see if I can find some longer-lasting fossils, as can be seen in the "Fossil Photos" section. If you're visiting this site, take an A-Z, be prepared to ask locals where you're going and check out as many parts of the river bank as possible to see if you can find the right bit. |
